About Ishikawa Prefectural History Museum
Inside the historic building made of red bricks, everyone can easily and joyfully engage with the history and culture of Ishikawa Prefecture.
Details
Three red brick buildings constructed during the Meiji to Taisho periods were originally used as an army arsenal and were later repurposed for Kanazawa College of Art after the war. When converting this building for use as the Ishikawa Prefectural History Museum, the exterior was faithfully restored to its original appearance at the time of construction. The interior was remodeled to integrate exhibition facilities, making it open to the public. The sight of three massive red brick warehouses, each 90 meters long, is quite rare in Japan, and the buildings themselves are of considerable value, designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
The museum houses over 170,000 archaeological, historical, and folklore-related materials, ranging from prehistoric to modern times. The permanent exhibition consists of a "Historical Display" that overview the history of Ishikawa Prefecture from ancient times to the present, centered around symbolic themes from various eras, and a "Folklore Display" that introduces the festival culture deeply rooted in local customs. Featuring large screens projecting videos, three-dimensional scenes, and models, the exhibition space allows everyone to enjoy and experience history.
Each year, multiple special exhibitions are held, and in the interactive experience hall, which is free for everyone to visit, there is the "Centennial Art Gallery" that introduces the history and charm of the building, as well as the "Historical Experience Plaza" where visitors can wear historical costumes and interact with actual artifacts, providing a broader understanding of the history of Ishikawa Prefecture.
