📖 Details
Iwakuni Castle was built in 1608 (the 13th year of the Keichō era) by Kikkawa Hiroie, the grandson of Mōri Motonari and the first lord of Iwakuni. It is a mountain castle that uses the Nishiki River flowing in front as its outer moat, situated on a hill at an altitude of about 200 meters. The castle features a unique structure with three tiers and four levels in the Momoyama style, where the upper levels are larger than the lower ones.
Only seven years after its construction, the castle was abandoned due to the Tokugawa shogunate's one castle per domain decree. The existing buildings are reinforced concrete structures rebuilt in 1962. To provide a better view of the cityscape, the position was moved about 50 meters to the east, and the stone walls of the old tenshu (main keep) have been restored using the stone masonry techniques of the time, which are open for public viewing.
Inside the tenshu, there are exhibition areas displaying models and photographs of the Kintai Bridge, weapons, and armor, as well as an observation deck that offers a panoramic view of Kikko Park, the castle town, Kintai Bridge, and the stunning scenery of the Seto Inland Sea islands.
It is recommended to take the cable car when visiting Iwakuni Castle, allowing visitors to enjoy the view of the distant sea from the surrounding mountains while ascending to the summit. In 2006, it was selected as one of Japan's 100 Famous Castles.
