📖 Details
The Japanese Yokai Communication Museum is a rare museum dedicated to the theme of yokai (Japanese monsters). It is located at the foot of the Oe Mountain Range, known for its legends of Shōjō and various yokai tales. The museum features a massive demon tile at its entrance, standing 5 meters tall and weighing 10 tons, making it the largest demon tile in Japan and the museum's prominent feature.
Oe Mountain is associated with three yokai legends: the story of Emperor Sujin's brother, Prince Hikoyasuko, who fought demons; the tale of Prince Maroko, brother of Prince Shōtoku, who also battled demons; and the legend of Shōjō. The museum showcases materials and masks related to these legends. Additionally, exhibits on "Japanese Yokai" include topics such as "Worshiping Yokai," "Yokai in Daily Life," "Setsubun Demons," and "Yokai in Folk Arts," providing various perspectives on yokai legends.
Among these, the "Evolution of Demon Tiles" section introduces the important function of demon tiles in protecting buildings from yokai invasion, tracing the changes in people's perceptions of yokai through these tiles. In the "World Yokai" section, masks are used to present the yokai feared by people around the world. The communication hall displays works created by individuals confronting the demons within themselves.
