🗺️ Japan's First Stone Steps (Kumamoto)

📝 Introduction

The sense of achievement after reaching the summit is irresistible!

📖 Details

Standing tall in the beautiful mountainous scenery of Misato Town, Daikōji Mountain rises to an elevation of 957 meters. The stone steps leading to the Shaka-in temple at the summit consist of an impressive 3,333 steps, earning the title of "Japan's Number One Stone Steps." In contrast to the Shaka-in temple, which has a history of 1,200 years, the stone steps are relatively new. In 1980, during a wave of town revitalization, a project was initiated to create the "Number One in Japan" movement in Kumamoto, leading to the construction of stone steps that would surpass the 2,446 steps of Haguro Mountain in Yamagata Prefecture. The steps were completed in 1988, with a total of 3,333 steps, surpassing those of Haguro Mountain and becoming the longest stone steps in Japan. They are made from stones sourced from various regions in Japan, as well as granite from countries around the world, including China, South Korea, India, Russia, Brazil, the United States, and South Africa, thus also serving as a city landmark showcasing international friendship. Along the lengthy stone steps, there are rest areas and restrooms to accommodate visitors as they ascend at their own pace. At the base of the steps, there is a stone information board displaying the locations of various facilities, which is worth checking before starting the climb. Every November, an event called "Conquering Japan's Number One" is held, attracting many people to participate in the celebration.
