About Jinfeng Pavilion
The elegant Western-style building complements the Japanese garden beautifully.
Details
Jinfūkaku is a villa built in 1907 (Meiji 40) by the 14th lord of the Tottori Ikeda family, Marquis Ikeda Nakahiro, on the site of the Ougi Palace at the ruins of Tottori Castle. It is designed in the style of the French Renaissance, creating an elegant two-story Western-style building, and it has also served as a filming location. It was named Jinfūkaku by the naval commander Tōgō Heihachirō at that time.
Designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, the interior of Jinfūkaku retains its original layout and is now used as an exhibition room. One of the highlights is the spiral staircase made of zelkova wood, which reaches a height of 4 meters. Its column-free structure is still regarded as a challenging architectural feat. The handrails are adorned with exquisite and delicate craftsmanship, leaving visitors in awe.
The backyard of Jinfūkaku features a strolling garden set against the backdrop of Kyuumatsuyama. It incorporates natural rocks for the stream and a turtle island floating in a pond shaped like a crane. A tea room called Hōsen-an, designed in the exquisite style of Kyoto, is located in the southwest corner and was originally used as a "makeup room."
Additionally, Kyuumatsu Park near Jinfūkaku is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot.
