About Kagurazaka
A cobblestone alley filled with nostalgic charm, where trendy brands coexist with old shops in an ancient street.
Details
Kagurazaka is located in Shinjuku, Tokyo, and was once a bustling geisha district where many geishas were active in the past. Within the neighborhood, there is a shopping street lined with various beautiful and trendy shops and cafes. Not far from the main street, there are quaint cobblestone alleys. The vintage wooden black fences and the somewhat aged Japanese restaurants create a tranquil and elegant atmosphere.
Kagurazaka features many intricate narrow alleys, each presenting a different charm. Among them, a small alley known as "Kakurenbo Yokocho" is particularly interesting, where people walking ahead can suddenly disappear from sight, as if playing hide and seek. Another appealing alley called "Michi Kusa Yokocho" is also captivating. Various izakayas are densely lined along a small path about 30 meters long, making it feel as if one has traveled back in time to Japan many years ago.
Kagurazaka is home to the official "French Language School" of the French government and several authentic French restaurants, earning it the nickname "Little Paris of Tokyo." This charming old street also features many historical landmarks such as Zenkoku-ji Temple and Akagi Shrine, making it a tourist spot where East meets West and old blends with new.
