About Kakuzan Lighthouse
A beautiful stone lighthouse facing the Sea of Japan.
Details
Standing on the northwest side of "Kakuzushima" in the Sea of Japan is a Western-style lighthouse. It was lit and put into operation in the 9th year of the Meiji era (1876) and is the first large lighthouse in the Sea of Japan. The tower stands about 30 meters tall, designed by the British engineer R.H. Brunton, and is beautifully crafted from granite. The base is made of rough-hewn granite blocks stacked up to 24 meters, with cut stone decorations above. In 2020, it was registered as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
Kakuzushima Lighthouse is also one of the few lighthouses in Japan that can be climbed to the top. Visitors can ascend 117 steps via a spiral staircase and a ladder to reach the platform, where they can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the magnificent Sea of Japan.
From late January to mid-February each year, it is the daffodil season, where visitors can admire the blooming daffodils in harmony with the beautiful lighthouse. During the flowering season, night illuminations are held, casting a dreamlike silhouette of the lighthouse in the dark night, leading visitors into an extraordinary world.
Highlights
The Lighthouse Memorial Hall in the old lighthouse keeper's residence showcases the life of the first British lighthouse keeper and information about the history of lighthouse construction.
