About Kawachi Fujien (Kawachi Wisteria Garden)
Colorful wisteria flowers surround this world-class breathtaking spot.
Details
From late April to early May each year, a wisteria garden spanning 3,000 tsubo is in full bloom with various colors of wisteria flowers. The garden is home to 22 species of wisteria, showcasing a vibrant array of colors including white, blue-purple, and pink. Among the most breathtaking features are two wisteria tunnels, measuring 80 meters and 110 meters in length.
The history of the wisteria garden dates back to 1968 when founder Masao Higuchi and his eldest son began to cultivate this overgrown mountainous area and planted beautiful wisteria, hoping to create a garden for everyone to enjoy. Wisteria trees that sank to the bottom of a lake during the construction of the Hanoi Reservoir (Kitakyushu City) were transplanted to the current wisteria garden, becoming the "Origin Tree" of the garden. After 50 years of cultivation, the "Origin Tree" has grown into a large wisteria over 120 years old, attracting large numbers of visitors each year.
Additionally, starting from mid-November each year, the 700 maple and acer trees surrounding the wisteria trellises turn a fiery red, making it a popular spot for autumn foliage. In recent years, to alleviate the crowdedness, advance ticket reservations are required, so please be sure to confirm before your visit.
