About Kumamoto Castle
The landmark of Kumamoto Prefecture! A famous castle with a history of over 400 years.
Details
Kumamoto Castle is a famous castle built by Kato Kiyomasa in 1607. Constructed using the most advanced techniques and labor of its time, this castle has served as an important stage in many moments of Japanese history. During the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877, the tenshu (main keep) was tragically burned down, but it was rebuilt in 1960. It suffered significant damage again due to the Kumamoto earthquake in 2016, but thanks to the efforts of the Kumamoto people and the application of the latest seismic technology, the restoration of the tenshu was completed in March 2021. Therefore, the Kumamoto Castle tenshu is defined as a "symbol of revival." It is recommended to visit and climb the newly reinforced tenshu to enjoy the breathtaking views.
According to drawings and ancient documents, the Honmaru Goten Hall, known as "Shokun no Ma," was restored in 2008 and is a must-see attraction when visiting Kumamoto Castle. The ceiling and walls are adorned with gold leaf, making it exceptionally luxurious.
Additionally, the castle features an underground passageway called "Yamiyo no Michi," built with stone walls; on the stone walls of the small tenshu, there are iron spikes known as "Boin," designed to prevent enemy invasions. Throughout the castle, there are many designs intended for defense or wartime use. Exploring these clever designs while touring the castle is also one of the enjoyable ways to experience Kumamoto Castle.
