Details

Kurikoma Mountain, which spans Miyagi Prefecture, Akita Prefecture, and Iwate Prefecture, stands at an elevation of 1,626 meters. The surrounding landscape is designated as a national park, preserving natural features such as undisturbed beech forests and wetlands. There are a total of nine hiking trails, ranging from beginner-friendly routes suitable for families that take about two hours to reach the summit, to more advanced trails for experienced climbers. The area also features several hot springs, including "Shinyu Onsen," nestled among the beech trees, and "Sugawa Kogen Onsen," located at an elevation of 1,126 meters, offering excellent views. Kurikoma Mountain is also renowned for its beautiful flowers, with alpine plants such as delicate early cherry blossoms, vibrant pink rock mirror flowers, and elegant ginkgo grass adorning the hiking trails from June to July. The autumn foliage is equally enchanting. During the peak viewing season in mid to late September, the bright red of the rowan trees and the clear yellow of the maple trees contrast beautifully with the black volcanic rocks, creating a stunning autumn landscape. Among these, "Iwakagami-daira" is the most representative spot for autumn leaves on Kurikoma Mountain. A beautiful carpet of red and yellow leaves covers the entire hillside, creating a breathtaking view that leaves visitors in awe.
