About Kurobe Dam
The tallest dam in Japan, known for its spectacular "tourist drainage."
Details
The Kurobe Dam, with a height of 186 meters, ranks as the tallest dam in Japan and is among the largest in the world. This dam was built over a span of seven years, involving more than 10 million workers who overcame countless challenges, and it was hailed as "the engineering marvel of the century."
One of the most captivating highlights of the Kurobe Dam is the "Tourist Water Release" held from early June to early October. A mist-like water flow of 10 tons per second is released from the dam, creating a stunning spectacle. Visitors can enjoy the magnificent sight of the water release from various viewpoints, including the dam observation deck, external stairs, the new observation plaza, the Rainbow Terrace, and the top of the dam. On the right bank of the dam, there is also a "Dam Photography Spot (ふぉっとダム)" (entry fee required) where travelers can take commemorative photos with the water release scene.
Additionally, visitors can head to the "Ogiwara Kurobe Dam Rest Area" to taste the "Dam Curry," themed around the arch of the dam lake, adding an unforgettable memory to their journey.
Highlights
Japan's largest arch dam is also one of the few of its scale in the world. The beautiful arch structure of the dam, along with the wing-like structures on both sides, is quite eye-catching. The sight of over 10 tons of water being discharged every second is extremely impressive and a must-see highlight. At the "Dam Photography Point (ふぉっとダム)," you can capture this thrilling and stunning scene.
