About Kyoto Kanze Hall
The largest Noh theater in Kyoto.
Details
A theater that regularly hosts grand Noh performances. The Kanze school is the largest school of Noh, performing at the Kanze Noh Theater in Kyoto. However, the Kanze Noh Theater was demolished in April 1945 due to forced evacuation during the latter part of World War II. After the war, there was a trend of reopening, and in 1958, a brand new Kyoto Kanze Hall was built at the current location, featuring a two-tiered seating arrangement and a fully cypress-wood Noh stage.
Since then, the Kyoto Kanze Association has held monthly meetings and various other events. It has become an important venue for easily enjoying Noh and Kyogen. There are performances suitable for beginners and free shows presented by amateurs. The venue provides explanatory subtitles for beginners, English subtitles, and a caption display device for the hearing impaired (some performances may require a fee), and it is recommended to rent these devices. The on-site bookstore operates in conjunction with performances, selling books, CDs, DVDs, and other materials related to Noh.
Highlights
Domoto Insho (1891-1975) is a must-see for the old pine painted on the stage backdrop.
Except for some performances, tickets are sold online. For certain shows, you can choose your seats.
There are often performances lasting over 4 hours during the day, so those with tight schedules should check the end time of the show in advance.
