Lake Akan is the fifth largest freshwater lake in Hokkaido and is known for being a habitat for Marimo. Marimo can be found in freshwater lakes around the world, and the beautiful round balls with a diameter of over 15 centimeters are the most distinctive feature of Lake Akan, boasting world-class viewing value.
You can see Marimo at the Marimo Observation Center, and with the admission ticket to the center, you can also take a 90-minute sightseeing boat tour around the lake. As the boat gently sways, you can enjoy the clear water surface and beautiful nature, and in the evening, you can witness the breathtaking scenery where the sunset blends with the landscape.
Surrounding Lake Akan is Akan Mashu National Park, a place where you can experience Hokkaido's unique and mysterious nature, and it is also a great spot for leisurely walks.
