Located in the heart of Nagano Prefecture, Lake Suwa is the largest lake in the Shinshu region, with a circumference of about 16 kilometers. The lakeside boasts rich natural scenery and is well-maintained. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful natural landscape while walking or jogging. There are many tourist attractions nearby, including art museums where you can appreciate artworks, or hot springs where you can relax in the water while quietly enjoying the picturesque views of Lake Suwa. You can also plan a day trip to visit several lakeside attractions at once. Another highlight of Lake Suwa is the variety of water activities available. This includes taking sightseeing boats or rowing on the lake, as well as winter fishing activities along the lakeshore. The most recommended experience is to take a sightseeing boat tour around the lake, where you can admire the stunning lake and mountain scenery from the water. On clear days, if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji in the distance. Every winter, the surface of Lake Suwa freezes. When temperatures drop to around -10°C and remain there for several days, the ice layer on the lake surface rises like mountains, producing a tremendous sound. This unique and mysterious phenomenon is referred to by locals as "Okinagashi."
