About Mikimoto Pearl Island
Don't miss the highlights of the visit, such as pearl jewelry, pearl cultivation techniques, and the exciting performances by ama (female divers).
Details
Mikimoto Pearl Island is the island where Mikimoto Kōkichi, known as the "Father of Pearls," successfully cultivated the world's first cultured pearl in 1893. Visitors can explore the Pearl Museum, the Mikimoto Kōkichi Memorial Hall, and watch live demonstrations of ama (female divers) diving to harvest pearls.
At the Pearl Museum, not only are antique jewelry and art crafts made from natural pearls displayed, but there is also a special exhibition area where professional staff explain the pearl production process using real specimens, models, and videos.
In the Mikimoto Kōkichi Memorial Hall, you can learn about the life of the founder, Mikimoto Kōkichi, from his beginnings at a udon shop in Toba to becoming the King of Pearls and living to the age of 96. The view from his later residence, "Pearl Pavilion," is particularly beautiful.
Additionally, ama played an important role in early pearl cultivation. Inside the hall, there are demonstrations of ama diving to collect shellfish at depths of 5 to 6 meters.
Moreover, the lush island features several energy spots. In front of "Tamano Miya," which Mikimoto Kōkichi also visited, there is an ancient well known as "Wish Well." It is said that if you write your wish on an Akoya shell and throw it into the well, your wish will come true. There is also a heart-shaped lucky stone nicknamed "Love Stone" that has caught the attention of passersby.
