Details
Mount Omuro (大室山) is located in Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture, and is an independent peak with an elevation of 580 meters. The mountain has a unique shape, resembling an inverted large bowl, and is a symbol of the Izu Plateau. Mount Omuro was formed by a volcanic eruption about 4,000 years ago and is designated as a national natural monument, being the largest volcanic tuff cone in the eastern Izu volcanic group.
Riding the chairlift swaying towards the summit takes about 6 minutes. The "Caldera Tour" is a 1-kilometer trail that circles the caldera, offering a 360-degree panoramic view of Mount Fuji, the Southern Alps, the Izu Seven Islands, and the Bōsō Peninsula. Additionally, there is the Asama Shrine (浅間神社) in the caldera, which is dedicated to the deity that blesses safe childbirth and good relationships. At the west side of the summit, five life-size statues of Buddha are situated. Historically, Mount Omuro was regarded as a sacred body, and it remains a popular energy site.
On New Year's Day, the chairlift operates specially from early morning to allow visitors to witness the first rays of dawn rising from the direction of Izu Oshima. Additionally, every February, a traditional "Yaki-yama" (焼山) ceremony takes place, where the entire mountain is set ablaze. The "Yaki-yama" tradition is said to have a history of over 700 years, originally held to produce high-quality thatch and repel pests. Today, it has become an important traditional event marking the arrival of spring in Izu.
