📝 Introduction

At the "Kanto's Oldest Sacred Place" established by a high monk, join your hands in prayer to the Great Buddha.

📖 Details

Nokogiriyama Nihonji Temple was founded about 1300 years ago by the high priest "Gyoki" and is known as "the oldest temple in the Kanto region." At the time of its establishment, it boasted an impressive scale with seven halls, and there are historical records of notable monks such as "Ryoben" and "Kukai" having stayed here. The current site is located on the slope of Nokogiriyama at an elevation of 329.4 meters. Visitors can see attractions such as the Yakushi Rurikō Nyorai, the 100-foot Kannon statue, and the group of 1,500 Arhat stone statues. Among the many attractions, the Yakushi Rurikō Nyorai statue is particularly famous as the Buddha of medicine who alleviates suffering, and it is said to have helped many people seeking healing from illnesses. The statue, carved from a massive rock, has a simple yet dignified appearance, with a gentle expression and holding a medicine jar in its left hand. It is said that many warriors seeking recovery from injuries used to visit and pray to the Great Buddha, spending moments of spiritual peace with their hands clasped in prayer. Surrounding the area are walking paths adorned with seasonal flowers and plants, divided into five zones: the Great Buddha Plaza, Arhat, middle slope, and the approach path. Exploring all areas takes about an hour and a half, making it a pleasant hike for visitors. However, some locations have many stairs and parts of the paths may be difficult to navigate, so it is recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes when visiting.
