The Ibaraki Prefecture Oarai Aquarium (Ocean World Ibaraki Oarai Aquarium) features approximately 580 species of aquatic life from both the ocean and rivers, making it one of Japan's premier aquariums. The aquarium is renowned for its sharks, with the largest number of specimens in the country. It also boasts Japan's largest dedicated tank for Manta rays, showcasing various rare species of Manta rays. Within the spacious interior, there are several themed areas: the "Sea of Rendezvous," which recreates the underwater scenery of Ibaraki; the "Sea of Darkness," centered around a mesmerizing jellyfish display; the "Sea of the World," where a variety of sharks and Manta rays swim in an underwater world; the "Sea of the World 2," featuring adorable creatures like the Oiran bird and North American river otters; and the "Ocean Zone," where visitors can enjoy dolphin and sea lion performances. In addition to these display areas with tanks, there is also the "Museum Zone," where visitors can view shark specimens and computer animations demonstrating shark swimming patterns; the "Exploration Classroom," where children can learn about marine life and have close encounters; the "Forest and River Zone," which recreates the real-life rivers of Ibaraki; and the "Rendezvous Deck," showcasing some of the largest specimens of the Goblin shark and sperm whale. Together, these form eight distinct areas, allowing visitors to learn about and understand the ecology of aquatic life from various perspectives.

Getting There
(1) Take the circular bus from "Oarai" station of the Kashima Rinkai Railway for about 15 minutes and get off at the "Aqua World (海洋世界)・Oarai" bus stop. (2) From "Nakaminato" station of the Hitachinaka Seaside Railway, take the Ibaraki Kotsu bus "50・Ibaraki University Mae" for about 7 minutes and get off at the "Aqua World (海洋世界)・Oarai" bus stop.
