About Ogaki Castle
Overlooking the Water City - The beautiful castle town of Ogaki.
Details
It is said that Ogaki Castle was built in the 4th year of Tenbun (1535) by Miyakawa Yasutaka of the Toki clan, the guardians of Mino. It is a symbol of the castle town of Ogaki and is beloved by the local people. In the 5th year of Keicho (1600), during the Battle of Sekigahara, which determined the fate of the nation, Ogaki Castle became the main camp of Ishida Mitsunari, making it a castle of significant historical value.
During the Edo period, the Toda family ruled as lords of the 100,000 koku castle for 11 generations. In the 11th year of Showa (1936), it was designated as a national treasure, but it was burned down during the Ogaki air raid in July of the 20th year of Showa (1945). Later, in the 34th year of Showa (1959), it was rebuilt, and the unique "4-story, 4-tiered total lacquer" style of the tenshu was once again presented to the world.
The interior of the castle now serves as an exhibition room, showcasing valuable materials related to the Battle of Sekigahara, three-dimensional models, and armor that was actually used during the later Edo period. The top floor serves as an observation deck, offering a panoramic view of the vast castle town of Ogaki.
