About Old Seto Residence

The mansion built in 1945 (Showa 20) allows one to understand the history of Wakkanai, which once thrived due to the use of bottom trawl fishing.

Details

The "Old Seto Residence" was built by the fishing industry boss Seto Tsunezo in 1952 (Showa 27), who became wealthy through the use of seine fishing boats. This two-story wooden residence is designated as a national tangible cultural asset. The area was at the forefront of seine net fishing, attracting people from various places, and the facility conveys the history of Wakkanai's prosperity from 1945 (Showa 20) to 1965 (Showa 40). The prominent red brick chimneys at the front and back of the residence are quite striking, and the red-tiled roof along with the thick mortar walls evoke the hotel architecture commonly seen during the Meiji to Taisho periods. The interior consists of Japanese-style rooms and Western-style halls, crafted from high-quality woods such as Akita cedar and Moso bamboo. The residence features not only a large kitchen, a spacious banquet hall that recreates the scene of gatherings, a wide tea room, and a meticulously maintained garden, but also offers a glimpse into the thriving fishing industry of that time. Inside the building, there are displays of models of bottom trawlers, fishing tools, and various electrical appliances from that era, showcasing the development of Wakkanai in the post-war period.
