About Old Takatori Residence
The magnificent modern Japanese-style architecture left by the coal mine tycoon of the Meiji era.
Details
Standing beside Karatsu Castle along the coast, the "Old Takatori Residence" was the home of Takatori Iiyo, known as the "King of Hizen Coal Mines" for owning coal mines such as the Kishima Mine. Built in 1905 (Meiji 38) as both a private residence and a guesthouse, it occupies a spacious area of approximately 2,300 tsubo, featuring two large buildings: the main hall and the living quarters.
The luxurious residence is primarily designed in a Japanese style but also includes Western-style rooms, showcasing the characteristics of modern Japanese architecture of that time. Additionally, the main hall features a Noh stage with wooden flooring, reflecting Takatori Iiyo's preferences, and its avant-garde and unique structure leaves a lasting impression.
There are also 72 sliding door paintings depicting wisteria and mountain cherry blossoms, created by a Kyoto artist who stayed for about six months, which are a must-see. The delicate designs, including plant reliefs and animal shapes on the transoms, as well as the cloisonné handles, create an atmosphere of opulence that resembles an art museum.
Take some time to carefully appreciate the details and reflect on the extravagant lifestyle of the coal mine king. The Old Takatori Residence was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 1998.
