Onomichi Hondori Shopping Street is located between the sea and mountains of Onomichi, stretching 1.6 kilometers and surrounded by many historical sites. This shopping street consists of five smaller streets: Ichiban Street, Chuo Shopping Street, Honmachi Center Street, Chuo Street, and Onomichi Street, featuring over 400 uniquely styled shops.
A strong retro atmosphere is a major characteristic of Onomichi Hondori Shopping Street. Among its highlights is "Hoshiun no Suibun," a youth hostel converted from an old private residence; the Onomichi Chamber of Commerce Memorial Hall, designated as an important cultural property of Onomichi; and many long-established shops, such as the oil and lacquer shop founded in 1804 and the Yamazaki Kiyoharu shop, which opened in 1919. There are also several spots nearby that allow visitors to experience the unique cultural ambiance of Onomichi. Notably, the "Onomichi Fumiko Enchi Memorial Museum," dedicated to the writer Fumiko Enchi, who has deep ties to Onomichi, stands out.
Numerous winding alleys extend from both sides of the main street, featuring old-fashioned wells, shrine torii gates, and narrow passageways that can only accommodate one person at a time, making them popular spots for memorable photographs.
The shopping street has a tax refund counter for one-time use. Shoppers can process their tax refund as long as they purchase from stores displaying the "Tax-Free" sign and meet specific conditions.
