About Osaka City Central Hall
The red brick building with a Renaissance style is a landmark of Nakanoshima.
Details
The conference facility located in Nakanoshima was completed in 1918 (Taisho 7) and was funded by Osaka stockbroker Iwamoto Einosuke. This elegant red brick building is characterized by its Neo-Renaissance style, incorporating elements of Baroque architecture, and has become a landmark in the Nakanoshima area.
Since its opening, the Osaka City Central Public Hall has served as a hub for culture and arts in Osaka, hosting lectures by historical figures such as Albert Einstein and Helen Keller. It has also been an international-class venue for operas and concerts featuring world-renowned artists.
To preserve the aging building, restoration and reconstruction work began in 1999. After three and a half years of restoration, this classical building from the Taisho era reopened in 2002 as a symbol of the Nakanoshima area and was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in the same year, becoming the first public hall in the western Japan region to receive this honor. The current public hall is open to the general public for social activities such as assembly halls and conference rooms, and can be used for various lectures, seminars, and concerts.
Part of the basement level 1 is open for free visits. The exhibition room displays items related to Iwamoto Einosuke, as well as valuable documents and photographs that record the creation period and the preservation and restoration process. In the "Free Viewing Area," there are seats that retain the design style of the time, with details such as metal hooks on the back of the chairs for hanging hats, providing a glimpse into the meticulous design style from the building's exterior to its interior.
In addition, a paid guided tour that requires advance reservation is also quite popular. Two sessions are held each day, from 10:00 to 10:30 and from 11:00 to 11:30. During the visit, in addition to the "Exhibition Room," guests can enter the "Special Room," which was originally designed as a VIP room. There are two tour options: a special plan that includes lunch and a commemorative gift, and a basic plan without lunch. The lunch is served at "Nakanoshima SOCIAL EAT AWAKE," located on the basement level 1. This restaurant is generally open to the public, and even those not participating in the guided tour can dine here.
