About Osu Shopping District
Nagoya's largest shopping street offers everything from long-established stores to shops catering to "otaku" culture.
Details
Osu Shopping District is composed of streets such as Wakamiya-dori, Fushimi-dori, Osu-dori, and Minami-Otsu-dori, making it the largest shopping district in Nagoya. Within the shopping district, there are various restaurants, vintage shops, daily goods stores, and electronics shops, with approximately 1,200 stores bustling together, creating a lively atmosphere.
In 1612, after Osu Kannon was relocated from Hashima City in Gifu Prefecture to its current location, a continuous stream of visitors came to pay their respects, leading to the establishment of the Osu Shopping District. Additionally, with Banpaku-ji temple, which owns most of the land in the vicinity of present-day Osu 3-chome, opening to the public in 1912, the shopping district expanded significantly and has thrived to this day.
One of the features of Osu Shopping District is the many shops selling trendy food, attracting many young people who enjoy the pleasure of eating while walking. There are also numerous electronics stores and computer specialty shops, sharing the title of "Japan's Three Major Electronics Districts" with Akihabara in Tokyo and Nipponbashi in Osaka. Since 2003, Nagoya has hosted the "World Cosplay Summit" every year, during which cosplayers from around the world gather in Osu Shopping District to participate in parades and various events, earning it the reputation of "Otaku Town."
