About Platinum Blue Pond

The dreamlike azure world is deeply moving.

Details

The vividly deep blue "Platinum Blue Pond" is one of the top tourist attractions in the Biei region of Hokkaido. This artificial lake was unexpectedly formed during a disaster prevention project to prevent volcanic mudflows from Mount Tokachi, where river water was retained by a concrete dam set up on the Biei River. This incredibly beautiful blue lake, combined with the lush greenery and the larch deadwood surrounding it, creates a dreamlike atmosphere reminiscent of a fairy tale world. The color of the lake changes with the seasons, time of day, and weather. In spring, a large amount of snowmelt flows in, presenting a bluish-green hue. In summer, under bright sunlight, it transforms into a refreshing, clear light blue world. In autumn, the lake's color competes with the vibrant red leaves surrounding it, creating a breathtaking scene. In winter, the frozen lake surface is covered with soft white snow, turning the area into a silver-white world. From November to around April, nighttime illuminations are held. The blue world, highlighted by the lights, is incredibly moving. There is a walking path along the pond where visitors can leisurely stroll and immerse themselves in the beauty of "Biei Blue" from various angles.
