About Sanriku Reconstruction National Park Southern Area (Iwaizaki)
A symbol of the reconstruction after the Great East Japan Earthquake.
Details
The Sanriku Reconstruction National Park spans Miyagi Prefecture, Iwate Prefecture, and Aomori Prefecture. Established for the purpose of recovery after the Great East Japan Earthquake in Heisei 23 (2011) and to preserve the memory of the disaster, it incorporates areas such as the Minami Sanriku Kinkasan Quasi-National Park and was renamed to its current title.
Among its attractions, "Iwaizaki" is located in the southern part of the Sanriku Reconstruction National Park and is a scenic spot where one can enjoy a panoramic view of the ocean. Notable sights include the "Tide Blowing Rock," where seawater is spouted from holes in the rock due to the pressure of waves and air, and the "Dragon Pine," a pine tree that has taken on a dragon-like shape after being affected by a tsunami. There are many unique and must-see landscapes. Walking trails have also been developed, and during low tide in the summer, the beach is filled with families enjoying the water.
In the early days, Iwaizaki was a prosperous salt production area under the jurisdiction of the Sendai Domain. At the Iwaizaki Salt Making Experience Hall, managed by the Kesennuma City Stage Up Tourism Association, visitors can easily participate in salt-making experiences for a small fee. It is said that the quantity and taste of the finished product can vary from person to person.
