About Seven Forges

Take a sightseeing boat to experience the natural art that has been nurtured over a long period of time up close.

Details

The Karatsu Nanagama (Seven Caves) is designated as a national natural monument. This scenic spot, which juts out above the sea, has been shaped over the years by the waves of the Genkai-nada, resulting in a landscape of basalt formations. The cliffs are deeply penetrated, with seven caves standing as their namesake. The largest cave has an entrance that is 3 meters wide and reaches a depth of 110 meters, formed by the cooling and solidification of lava. You can also see the "columnar jointing" on the rock surface, arranged in a regular and orderly manner like columns. From Yuiko Port, you can take a sightseeing boat that departs every hour to experience the power of nature up close. The boat ride lasts about 40 minutes, offering views of the Yuiko Bridge and the directions of Fukuoka and Nagasaki, making it one of the must-do activities in the Yuiko sightseeing itinerary. Additionally, there is a viewing platform and walking path prepared on the grassy area above the Nanagama, which is perfect for a leisurely stroll on sunny days. On the northern side of the cape, there is the Dokki Shrine dedicated to Empress Jingu, which is recommended for a visit as well. The Nanagama area is also a popular fishing spot.

Highlights

Take a sightseeing boat to admire the massive caves created by nature from the sea. Depending on the wave conditions, there may also be an opportunity to enter the caves! Walking on the grass above the Seven Caves is very refreshing. It is a popular fishing spot.
