About Shakujii Ice River Shrine

The chief guardian deity of the Shakujii area is highly revered by the local community.

Details

During the Muromachi period, specifically in the Eitoku era (1394-1428), a shrine was established within the Ishikawa Castle built by the powerful local clan, the Toyoshima clan, and it was regarded as the guardian deity of the area. After the fall of Ishikawa Castle, it continued to be revered as the main shrine of the Ishikawa region, earning the respect of the local residents. Today, it is affectionately referred to as "Mr. Ice River of Ishikawa" among the people. The enshrined deity, Susanoo no Mikoto, is the brother of Amaterasu, the goddess who defeated the eight-headed serpent, Yamata no Orochi. Known for his strength, bravery, and ability to drive away evil spirits, he is believed to provide various blessings such as protection from evil, fostering good relationships, ensuring family safety, and healing from illness. The shrine has a close relationship with the community and is a popular place for ceremonies like Shichi-Go-San and weddings. Prayers can be requested on the same day without prior reservation. It also offers services for ground-breaking ceremonies, completion ceremonies, and purification of new homes. An annual grand festival is held on the third Sunday of October, featuring around 50 stalls, creating a lively atmosphere. Throughout the year, various festivals are celebrated, including the New Year's festival (Saidan Matsuri) on January 1, Setsubun Matsuri in February, the Iinichi market (井のいち) in May, the Nagoshi no Harae on July 1, the Kazuuma Tanabata on the first Sunday of August, the Isshin Naki Sumo on the third Sunday of August, and the Niinamesai on November 23.
