⛩️ Shimogamo Shrine (Kamomioya Shrine)
🎨 Shrine Gallery
📝 Introduction
One of the oldest shrines in Kyoto and Japan, a must-visit shrine for those seeking love and relationships.
📖 Details
The official name of Shimogamo Shrine is "Kamo Miko Shrine." It is commonly referred to as "Shimogamo-san" or "Shimogamo Shrine" because it is located downstream of the Kamo River, which runs through Kyoto. The main hall consists of two buildings, east and west, and has been designated as a national treasure, making it one of the oldest shrines in Kyoto. In 1994, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
From the entrance of Shimogamo Shrine to the main hall is about 1 kilometer, with the lush and expansive "Tadasu no Mori" ahead. Nearly 600 trees, aged between 200 and 600 years, are planted here, exuding a sacred atmosphere, allowing visitors to enjoy a forest bath before their worship.
Within Shimogamo Shrine, there are sub-shrines that govern relationships, beauty, and business success. At the "Mitama Shrine," which enshrines the deity of warding off misfortune, many people participate in the "Ashiyu Shinto Ritual" during the five days starting from the end of July, where they soak their feet in the pond in front of the shrine to dispel calamities and illnesses. Additionally, the "Mitama Dango" sold here is said to resemble the bubbles sold in the pond, topped with sweet sauce. After worshiping, visitors can enjoy this dessert at nearby tea houses.
Throughout the year, Shimogamo Shrine hosts various events, among which the "Aoi Matsuri," one of Kyoto's three major festivals, is highly recommended. It takes place on May 15 each year and dates back approximately 1400 years, featuring a parade of people dressed in Heian period attire from the Kyoto Imperial Palace to Shimogamo Shrine and Kamigamo Shrine, making the "Street Ceremony" a sight worth seeing and a valuable opportunity to learn about ancient Japanese culture up close. The "Yabusame," held in early May within Tadasu no Mori, is also worth watching. This Shinto ritual involves archers dressed in court attire shooting targets from galloping horses, praying for the success of the "Aoi Matsuri."
