⛩️ Nagao Tsurugi Shrine

📝 Introduction

The torii gate in the sea and the sunset, a miraculous combination that happens once a year.

📖 Details

The 永尾剱神社 (Nagao Ken Shrine) is said to have been established in the year 713 AD, overlooking the 八代海 (Yatsushiro Sea) and dedicated to the 海童神 (Kaidō God). According to legend, the shrine was founded when a stingray, carrying the Kaidō God, attempted to cross the mountain but failed, leading to its location here. The shrine is situated at the sharp tail of the stingray, which resembles a sword, hence the name "剱神社" (Ken Shrine). It is widely known for its mysterious torii gate standing in the sea during high tide (which can be approached on foot during low tide) and the rare stingray ema (votive tablets). The shrine is famous for prayers for the healing of gastrointestinal diseases, attracting many worshippers despite being a village shrine. Additionally, the shrine hosts the 八朔祭 (Hassaku Festival) on the first day of the eighth lunar month, coinciding with the appearance of the mysterious firelight known as "不知火" (Shiranui), which occurs only during specific periods at midnight near the sea. This event gathers many devotees and visitors, creating a lively atmosphere throughout the night. However, "不知火" can only be seen under favorable weather and sea conditions, and in recent years, urban development and artificial lighting have made this phenomenon increasingly rare.

⭐ Highlights

The torii standing in the sea is the best photo spot. On Hassaku Day, the "Fire Festival of the Unknowable Fire Sea" is held at the nearby Matsugo New Port. Around the 1st of August in the lunar calendar, there is a chance to see the "Unknowable Fire" mirage offshore in the Unknowable Fire Sea (Ariake Sea). Fold a piece of origami into the shape of a stingray, which serves as a messenger of the gods, and make a wish. During low tide, it is offered in front of the torii in the sea. *The origami used for wishing is made from pure, plant-based, pollution-free eco-friendly paper.
