About Shiraishigawa Tsutsumi One Thousand Cherry Blossoms
The clear blue of the stream, the white of the remaining snow on the mountain peaks, and the cherry blossoms compete in beauty! The vibrant and romantically beautiful thousand cherry blossoms (千本桜).
Details
Along the Shiroishi River in the southern part of Miyagi Prefecture, approximately 1,200 cherry blossom trees are planted along an 8-kilometer riverbank, all blooming simultaneously in spring. The clear blue of the stream, the soft pink of the cherry blossoms, and the white of the remaining snow on the Zao mountain range create a picturesque contrast, making it a selected site in the "Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots" and earning the nickname "Ichimoku Senbonzakura" (A Thousand Cherry Blossoms at a Glance).
To coincide with the blooming season, the "Ogawara Cherry Blossom Festival" is held, featuring nighttime lantern lighting events. There are many picturesque photography spots along the riverbank; the "Suehiro Promenade Bridge" offers views of rows of cherry blossom trees on both sides of the river, while the "Nirakami Dam" frames the Zao mountain range with the Senbonzakura. The "Shibata Senzakubashi" bridge allows for capturing photos of cherry blossoms alongside trams.
Additionally, at the "Shiroishi River Senbonzakura Park," visitors can enjoy the vibrant scenery of spring flowers such as tulips and azaleas. From the "Funao Castle Ruins Park," which is home to 1,300 cherry blossom trees, one can overlook the beauty of the mountain castle cherry blossoms and the riverside cherry blossoms. Among the cherry trees along the riverbank, there is also a noteworthy tree, known as the "Japan's Largest Somei Yoshino," which has a trunk circumference of 4.35 meters and a height of 16 meters.
