About Shore of Pure Land

Like a "Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss," it is a scenic spot where one can behold the breathtaking views that transcend the mundane world.

Details

Facing the Sanriku Coast, the rocky beach known as "Jingtu no Hama" (浄土の浜) is a representative scenic spot in Japan. According to legend, in 1680, the monk Reikyo visited this place and was struck by the pristine rocky beach, the beautifully clear sea surface, and the complex terrain that seemed to transcend the mundane world, exclaiming that it was "like the Pure Land," which is how it got its name. The coastline, shaped by the dynamic forces of the sea and land, showcases the awe-inspiring power of nature. Numerous unique rock formations, created around 52 million years ago, have given rise to several breathtaking viewpoints, each with its own name. The most popular among them is the "Aoi no Dōkutsu" (青の洞窟) or "Blue Cave." In this blue space created by sunlight and the highly transparent sea water, one can personally experience the magical energy of nature. In addition to the boardwalk along the bay, the observation deck at the "Jingtu no Hama Rest House" offers beautiful views of Jingtu no Hama. Furthermore, taking a ride on a traditional small fishing boat known as "Sappa-bune" (サッパ船) allows visitors to enter the depths of the "Aoi no Dōkutsu," providing a close-up view of the unique rock formations, making it an exciting and popular activity.
