About Tojinbo
The spectacular sight of towering waves crashing against the steep cliffs!
Details
Tojinbo is a cliff formed by the erosion of sea waves, renowned as a scenic spot since ancient times and designated as a national scenic area and natural monument. The rugged and steep cliffs stretch for 1 kilometer along the coastline of Mikuni Town. The unique rock formations at Tojinbo are geologically rare "columnar joints," and it is said that there are only three places in the world where such formations can be seen, including Tojinbo.
The name "Tojinbo" comes from a monk's name in "Heisenji." According to legend, this monk named Tojinbo was known for his violent temperament. One day, he was lured to the edge of the cliff by fellow monks who could no longer tolerate his behavior and was pushed off the cliff to his death. In an instant, the weather changed dramatically, and the calm sea was stirred into a tempest by Tojinbo's restless spirit, with the bad weather lasting for forty-nine days. Since then, this place has been known as Tojinbo.
Due to its terrifying and tragic historical legend, as well as its steep and unique geographical environment, Tojinbo frequently appears as a famous filming location in thriller movies and mystery television dramas. The cliffs rise more than 20 meters, equivalent to the height of 8 to 9 stories, and standing atop them can induce a sense of fear. However, the horizon and the island known as "Kami no Shima" (神の島) seen from there are quite beautiful. Additionally, nearby is the "Tojinbo Tower," which stands about 55 meters tall, where visitors can climb to the top for a view or take a sightseeing boat to admire the surrounding bizarre rock formations and the grand, majestic cliff scenery.
