About Water Park Fukushima Gata
The park by the water, rich in natural ecology, attracts bird lovers, insect enthusiasts, and flower admirers.
Details
Fukushima Lagoon in Niigata City, the first municipality in Japan to receive Ramsar Convention certification, is the largest wetland in the city. Over 220 species of wild birds, 800 species of plants, and more than 900 species of insects have been discovered here, making it a treasure trove of nature. The area has been developed into a park with various facilities to explore the waterfront.
The water station "View Fukushima Lagoon" provides information about the natural and cultural aspects of Fukushima Lagoon, highlighting key features of the park. It introduces local flora and fauna, including the national natural monuments, the Greater White-fronted Goose and the Whooper Swan, as well as the giant water lily, which has the largest leaf area of any aquatic plant in Japan. There are also interesting displays such as real-time images of the lagoon. From the rooftop observation area, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Fukushima Lagoon and the Echigo Plain.
In addition to "View Fukushima Lagoon," there are other attractions. At the "Nature Learning Garden," visitors can observe the lagoon's flora and fauna up close. The shop and café, "LAGOON BREWERY," produces and sells craft sake made from strawberries, local fruits, and herbs. The traditional-style building "Kitarai-tei" offers natural ingredients from Fukushima Lagoon and serves "Lagoon Cuisine," which requires a reservation. For those looking to get closer to nature, the night camping site or the self-service accommodation "Hishikaze-so" is recommended. Day trips include barbecues, campfires, bird watching, and lagoon cuisine, allowing visitors to relax and enjoy the rich natural surroundings. From mid-April to mid-May, a million rapeseed flowers paint the park in bright yellow. In late September, the "Fukushima Lagoon Nature Culture Festival" is held, featuring the spectacular migratory bird land art "Geese Welcome Lanterns," which uses thousands of LED lights.
Nearby, "Niigata Senbei Kingdom" introduces the history and manufacturing process of rice crackers from Niigata, the land of rice, and offers experiential activities, making it a recommended stop.
