About Wedded Rocks (Mie Prefecture, Ise City)
Two large rocks that depend on and accompany each other like a couple.
Details
At Futamiura Beach, the 9-meter tall Male Rock and the 4-meter tall Female Rock stand side by side, making it a well-known sight. These two rocks symbolize the energy of "a harmonious marital relationship," attracting many women and couples seeking good fortune in love. The sacred stone of Shin'yu, which is believed to have sunk 700 meters into the sea, and the torii gate that faces the sunrise have long been revered by the public. From the approach to Futami Okitama Shrine, one can see the couple rocks.
From May to July, the sunrise can be seen rising between the couple rocks. Especially around the summer solstice, when the weather conditions are favorable, one can witness the sun slowly rising behind Mount Fuji in the distance, drawing many photographers who come specifically to capture this spectacular scene. In autumn and winter, a full moon can be seen hanging between the couple rocks, making for a stunning photograph.
Every year, on May 5th, September 5th, and the weekends in mid-December, a grand shimenawa (sacred rope) changing ceremony takes place, attracting large crowds. The area is also a famous spot for watching the first sunrise of the New Year.
