There are thousands of cherry blossom trees lining the river, making it a popular spot for flower viewing.
Details
Yamanakigawa is located near the border of Osaka Prefecture and Wakayama Prefecture. It was the site of a post town along the Kishu Road used by the Tokugawa family during their sankin-kōtai (alternate attendance) in ancient times, and the old streets in the surrounding area have been preserved to this day. Today, the area features stone-paved roads and lanterns, full of local charm. Additionally, visitors can dine in stylish cafes and restaurants converted from old houses, or experience making stained glass at a stained glass workshop.
Along the riverbed of Yamanakigawa, which flows next to JR Hanwa Line's Yamanakigawa Station, Somei Yoshino cherry trees and mountain cherry trees have been planted since the 1960s. Currently, there are about a thousand cherry blossom trees lining the roads. From late March to mid-April, the cherry blossom viewing season attracts a large number of tourists, making it a well-known cherry blossom spot in Osaka.
During the blooming season, "Yamanakigawa Cherry Blossom Festival" is held at the "Ganpi Kingdom" in front of the station. The event features stage performances and market activities. It’s worth mentioning that "Ganpi Kingdom" is a free-entry park, making it a great place to enjoy a bento. Additionally, there are nighttime illuminations of the cherry blossoms, creating a dreamy atmosphere that is completely different from the daytime. About a 7-minute walk from Yamanakigawa Station, in the residential area behind Jifukuji Temple, you can find weeping cherry trees in full bloom, which is also a must-see spot. If you extend your walk a bit further, you can visit the fourth burial mound of Kōbō Daishi, recognized as a "Japan Heritage."
