About Yanaka Ginza Shopping Street
Walking slowly down the "Sunset Steps," you will find yourself in a shopping street that exudes a nostalgic atmosphere.
Details
Exiting from JR Nippori Station and walking up the gently sloping Gotensaka path located on the left side, you will come across the steps known as "Yūhi Kaidan" (夕陽階梯). This staircase is a famous landmark symbolizing the Yanaka area and is beloved as the best spot for watching the sunset. If you slowly walk down the steps, you will reach "Yanaka Ginza Shopping Street." This historic shopping street, which naturally formed around 1945, is home to a variety of private shops, including butcher shops, fruit and vegetable stores, fish markets, and electronics shops, as well as popular donut shops and home goods stores loved by both local residents and visiting tourists. In just a short stretch of 170 meters, there are about 60 shops gathered together.
Regular customers chat happily with shop owners, children's laughter fills the air, and enticing aromas waft from the delicatessens... the atmosphere of the shopping street allows one to truly experience "traditional Japan." Every summer, the "Hyakkoi Matsuri" is held, along with a "Thanksgiving Festival" in July and December, deepening the connections among the local community.
The retro and nostalgic atmosphere of Yanaka Ginza Shopping Street is not only cherished by locals but has also attracted tourists from all over Japan and abroad in recent years, becoming a noteworthy destination.
