About Yokosuka Museum of Art

A museum that integrates the ocean and natural landscapes.

Details

Located in Kannonzaki Park, which extends outward on the eastern side of the Miura Peninsula, the park follows the concept of "the entire nature is an art museum," with most of its space designed underground, seamlessly blending with the surrounding ocean and forest of the park. The building features a unique glass exterior, allowing ample natural light to flood in through circular windows set in the ceiling and walls. The collection primarily focuses on works by writers and artists related to Yokosuka and the Miura Peninsula, housing approximately 5,000 pieces of modern and contemporary Japanese art. In addition to four rotating exhibitions each year, various themed exhibitions are held to convey the charm of art. There is also a forest plaza where visitors can enjoy forest bathing and a seaside plaza with lawns, allowing for a leisurely time spent appreciating art. In the attached "Yachiyo Rokuro Museum," works by the representative Showa-era painter Rokuro Yachiyo, who set up a studio near Kannonzaki, are collected. Through a rich array of exhibits, visitors can appreciate the nostalgic Showa landscapes depicted by Yachiyo. Additionally, various experiential courses and events are frequently held.
