About Yushima Seido
The Confucius Temple built by the fifth shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi is a popular spot for praying for success in exams.
Details
In the third year of the Genroku era (1690), the "Yushima Seido" was built under the orders of Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, the fifth shogun of the Edo shogunate, as a place to honor the Chinese Confucian scholar Confucius and to promote Confucianism. It is the most renowned Confucian temple still existing in Japan and was designated as a national historic site in 1922.
The Seido once served as an educational institution for teaching Confucianism, known as the "Shōheizaka Gakumonjo," but it closed shortly after the Meiji period began. Within its grounds, there were schools that were the predecessors of today's Tsukuba University and Ochanomizu University, as well as various institutions such as the Ministry of Education, libraries, and museums. It is also famous as the "Cradle of Modern Education in Japan," and along with Yushima Tenjin, it is a popular spot for those praying for academic success. During exam seasons, many students come to purchase protective charms for academic achievement and special writing brushes.
Inside the main hall, the Daiseiden, there are enshrined statues of Confucius, Mencius, Yan Hui, Zengzi, and Zisi, along with a 4.57-meter tall statue of Confucius, the largest in the world. The Daiseiden is open for visits on Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays.
