About Aso Shrine (Tokyo) (阿蘇神社(東京))
Guarded by giant hinoki cypress trees, this shrine has a history of over 1400 years.
Details
Aso Shrine was founded in 601 AD. It is said that this ancient shrine was revered by historical Japanese figures such as Taira no Masakado and Tokugawa Ieyasu. The main hall is believed to have been constructed around 931 by Taira no Masakado and has undergone numerous renovations since then. As a remnant of early Edo period shrine architecture, it has now been designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Tokyo. The enormous cypress tree within the shrine stands at 18 meters tall and is said to have been planted in 940; it is also designated as a Natural Monument of Tokyo. The shrine is located at the end of the "Tamagawa Cycling Road," and many cyclists come to pay their respects. The shrine also offers talismans for safety while cycling.
