About Chokai Mountain Omokime Shrine

The shrine, with the sacred mountain "Chokai-san" spanning Yamagata Prefecture and Akita Prefecture as its deity, is dedicated to this spiritual peak.

Details

The main shrine of the Chokai Mountain Ōmononokami Shrine is located at the summit of Chokai Mountain, with two other shrines, the Fukiura-kuchi Shrine and the Warabioka-kuchi Shrine, at the foot of the mountain. Chokai Mountain is situated at the border of Yamagata Prefecture and Akita Prefecture, and it stands at an elevation of 2,236 meters, making it a sacred peak. Due to the appearance of snow at its summit, it is also known as "Dewa Fuji" and is listed among the "100 Famous Mountains of Japan" and "100 Scenic Views of Japan." There are climbing routes available from both Akita and Yamagata Prefectures, allowing climbers of all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned mountaineers, to enjoy the experience (the climbing season is from May to October). At the summit, there is the main hall of the Chokai Mountain Ōmononokami Shrine, established in the 25th year of Emperor Kinmei (564 AD). Dewa Ichinomiya is known for its efficacy, attracting many climbers and worshippers seeking blessings. The Omuro Sanro offers accommodation (reservation required, open only in summer). Between the 5th and 7th stations, there is a leisurely hiking route that takes about 2 hours, making it accessible even for those who are not skilled at climbing. In the summer, various alpine plants such as Chokai thistle and Chokai fukinoto can be seen, while in the autumn, visitors can enjoy walking amidst the vibrant autumn leaves, attracting many tourists who come to admire the foliage while hiking.

Highlights

Some routes have ladders and climbing sections, so it's recommended to confirm in advance before preparing for the hike. The hiking season is from May to October each year. At the summit, there is the main shrine of the energy spot, 鳥山大物忌神 (Tori-yama Ōmononokami). The hiking trails, which allow you to enjoy beautiful flowers and plants while walking, are quite popular.
