About Dōai Station

The underground platform has become the favorite "Mole Station" for railway enthusiasts.

Details

Duoai Station is located at the border of Gunma Prefecture and Niigata Prefecture, and it is an unmanned station on the Joetsu Line of East Japan Railway Company (JR East). With its platform situated 70 meters underground, it has become famously known as the "Deepest Mole Station in Japan." The down-line platform is hidden deep underground, exuding a unique atmosphere reminiscent of a secret base. It has also been selected as a filming location for movies, making it a characteristic feature of the station that there are more tourists than passengers using the train. To get from the underground platform to the ticket gate above ground, one must climb 462 steps. The chilly air on the platform gradually warms up as it mixes with the air above ground while ascending the stairs. The station building of Duoai Station is inspired by Mount Tanigawa, designed with a striking sharp-angled triangular roof, and has been selected as one of the "Top 100 Stations in Kanto." As it is an unmanned station, remember to request a boarding certificate when taking the train. Train services are infrequent, with about five trains in each direction daily. It is recommended to check the train schedule before visiting.
