About Geibi Gorge
Sitting on a boat steered by a boatman, enjoying the cliffs and the scenery of the four seasons.
Details
The Gibi Valley is a gorge formed by the erosion of the "Satetsu River," a tributary of the Kitakami River that flows through Iwate Prefecture from north to south. The cliffs along the coast rise between 50 to 100 meters and stretch for about 2 kilometers. It is dotted with unique landscapes such as strange rocks, caves, and waterfalls, and is listed as one of Japan's top 100 scenic spots, designated as a national historic site and natural monument.
If you want to enjoy the stunning views from the water, you can take a 90-minute round trip boat ride known as "Jōbō-yū." The boatman skillfully maneuvers the boat with a single oar while humming the song "Gibi Chōbune," which is also one of the valley's attractions. You can appreciate various seasonal landscapes, including fresh greenery in spring, wisteria in early summer, autumn leaves, and snowy scenes in winter.
At the turning point of the voyage, you can disembark to visit the unique rock formations that gave Gibi Valley its name, "Shishi Nose" and "Ōgibi Iwa." Ōgibi Iwa is a spot to test your luck. If you throw a lucky ball into the wishing cave on the opposite shore, it is said that your wish will come true. You can choose one of ten types of lucky balls inscribed with characters for luck, longevity, and happiness (5 balls for 100 yen) to make your wish.
Throughout the year, various seasonal activities are held around Gibi Valley, including tea ceremonies on boats, the Jūrokuzuki music concert on boats, and winter warm table boat events. It’s advisable to check in advance before your departure.
