⛩️ Hōkawa-ji (Hōkawa Temple)

📝 Introduction

The temple where the poet Saigyō Hōshi rests in eternal sleep has about 1,500 cherry blossom trees blooming in spring.

📖 Details

Hōkawa-ji, located at the foot of Mount Katsuragi, is said to have been founded by the monk Yakushiji in the 4th year of Emperor Tenji's reign (665). It is a temple established by Emperor Tenmu's decree. During the Heian period, Kūkai built a new temple complex at the command of Emperor Saga, reviving it as a sacred site of esoteric Buddhism. The famous poet Saigyō Hōshi, known for his 94 poems included in the "Shinkokin Wakashū," visited Hōkawa-ji during the late Heian period and later rested here. Within the temple grounds, there is the Saigyō Hall, which houses a seated statue of Saigyō, and Saigyō's grave. The "Saigyō Memorial Hall" (admission fee required) located behind the main hall displays treasures, illustrations, and books related to Saigyō. The mountainous area surrounding the temple is a well-known cherry blossom viewing spot. From late March to early April, around 1,500 cherry trees, including Somei Yoshino and yamazakura, bloom. The red weeping cherry tree in front of the main hall also blossoms with deep pink flowers, adding a touch of splendor to the temple. After the cherry blossom season, the natural monument in the main hall's garden, a "kaidō" (flowering quince) estimated to be about 350 years old, will continue to bloom.
