⛩️ Heian Shrine

📝 Introduction

The vibrant and beautiful vermilion shrine architecture is one of the top tourist attractions in Kyoto.

📖 Details

Established in the 28th year of the Meiji era (1895) to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of the capital's relocation to Heian-kyo, this shrine is relatively new. The shrine's architecture is modeled after the "Chodoin," the main hall used for important ceremonies in Heian-kyo. Standing within its grounds, the striking vermilion buildings are beautiful and eye-catching, and stepping into the inner precincts feels as if one has traveled back in time to the Heian period. Inside the shrine, there are many important cultural properties of the nation; among them is the magnificent "Daigokuden," designed based on the main hall of "Chodoin," along with the intricately crafted "Byakko-ro" and "Soryu-ro," showcasing numerous highlights. The famous "Otorii," a symbol of Heian Jingu, stands at an impressive height of 24 meters and a width of 18 meters. The deities enshrined here are Emperor Kanmu, who relocated the capital to Heian-kyo, and Emperor Komei, the last emperor of Heian-kyo. They are believed to provide blessings for good fortune, prosperous business, disaster relief, and academic success, among other areas. Before the war, Heian Jingu was often used for wedding ceremonies, making it a popular spiritual site for those seeking good relationships. Surrounding the shrine is the "Shinen," divided into four areas: east, west, south, and north, each planted with colorful flowers that change with the seasons. The cherry blossoms in spring are particularly enchanting, attracting visitors from far and wide.

⭐ Highlights

Built in 1895 to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of the relocation to Heian. The shrine buildings, modeled after the "Chōdō-in" of Heian-kyō, are exceptionally beautiful. The "Shinen," where flowers bloom in all four seasons, is also breathtakingly beautiful. It showcases the important cultural asset "Kyoto City Electric Railway Tram" (commonly known as the chin-chin tram), which has deep historical connections to the construction of Heian Shrine.
