⛩️ Yuge Shrine

Yuge Shrine stands tall on the Hōō no Hara facing the Seto Inland Sea. It is regarded as one of the important gateways to Yuge Island, characterized by its location overlooking the ocean. The dragon carvings on the main hall are a major highlight, and there is also a massive stone statue symbolizing the male genitalia within the shrine grounds. It is said that the shrine enshrines the high priest Dōkyō, who was active in the political world during the 8th century. Dōkyō, who hailed from the Yuge clan in Osaka, is thus referred to as "Yuge Dōkyō," and this is believed to be the origin of the name Yuge Island. In October, the shrine holds an autumn festival, where one can witness the local people celebrating with a dazzling golden portable shrine (mikoshi) carrying the deity. Along the coast, there are beautiful sandy beaches that curve gracefully, and a pathway lined with pine trees that are about 300 years old runs alongside. In the gentle sea breeze, one can leisurely enjoy the beautiful coastal scenery that the Japanese refer to as "Shirasuna Seisō" (white sand and green pines). During the summer, Matsubara Beach becomes a swimming area, allowing visitors to enjoy the water amidst this stunning landscape. The pine forest has been developed into a family camping site, equipped with outdoor water supply areas and cooking facilities.
