📜 Content

Kumano Hongu Taisha was established during the reign of Japan's 10th Emperor, Emperor Sujin, and primarily enshrines the deity "Katsumi no Mikoto." In 2004, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since ancient times, it has been revered not only by the upper classes but also by samurai and commoners, leading to a steady stream of pilgrims from all over the country coming to pay their respects. The sight of numerous people making their way along the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route to Kumano Hongu Taisha has been described as "the ant-like pilgrimage to Kumano." In addition to Katsumi no Mikoto, the luxurious shrine with a cypress bark roof also enshrines "Fusumi no Okami" and "Hayatama no Okami." It is known for its efficacy in granting safety in travel, bountiful fishing, family harmony, and marital bliss. Furthermore, its welcoming nature that embraces people of all identities, ages, and genders has made Kumano Hongu Taisha a long-admired site. The area also features attractions such as "Mizusan Shrine," famous for its deities of connection and purification. About 500 meters from the main shrine lies the sacred site of Daizaihara, where it is said that deities once descended (the location of Kumano Hongu Taisha before the great flood in 1889). Standing at about 34 meters tall and 42 meters wide, the grand torii gate here is a well-known energy spot. Notably, especially after the arrival of spring, the vicinity of Daizaihara is one of the top cherry blossom viewing spots in Wakayama Prefecture. Surrounding Kumano Hongu Taisha, in addition to the "World Heritage Kumano Hongu Museum" that exudes the charm of Kumano, there is "Zuiho-den," which features a tea house and souvenir shops, as well as nearby attractions such as "Kawayu Onsen," "Yunomine Onsen," and "Wataze Onsen" (which together form the Kumano Hongu Onsen area), all of which can be visited conveniently after worshipping at the shrine.
