📖 Details
Since its opening in 1972, the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum has been a beloved pilgrimage site for steam locomotive enthusiasts. In 2016, it was renovated and reopened as the Kyoto Railway Museum. With the fundamental concept of being a "cultural hub for railways in collaboration with the local community," the museum offers hands-on experiences that inspire wonder and emotion, allowing visitors to learn about the history, safety, and technology of railways. It is the largest railway museum in Japan.
On the first floor of the museum, there is a display that includes steam locomotives inherited from the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum, with a total collection of 53 railway vehicles. The exhibits feature the largest C62 steam locomotive from the JNR era, which was pivotal in the post-war express train era, the first-generation Shinkansen 0 series train, and the 500 series Shinkansen, which holds a Guinness World Record for its operational speed of 300 kilometers per hour, among other precious trains that have left their mark on Japanese railway history.
The second floor of the museum features a massive railway model scene, approximately 30 meters wide and 10 meters deep, where staff operate models at a scale of about 1/80. This area not only includes street scenes and landscapes but also faithfully reproduces railway facilities such as train depots. Visitors can enjoy watching the models in motion while learning about the railway operation systems. This floor also includes a simulation area where drivers can experience operating simulations and safety control devices like "ATS" and "ATC."
Additionally, the outdoor fan-shaped shed is a must-see attraction. As described, this uniquely shaped shed dynamically showcases a total of 20 steam locomotives, exciting even those who are not railway enthusiasts. Furthermore, the SL Steam train ride, which has been popular since the days of the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum, is also highly praised. Tickets for the ride are for designated times, so it is recommended to purchase them in advance based on your itinerary.
