📝 Introduction
The largest lake in Shiretoko National Park, preserving its original natural ecology.
📖 Details
The largest freshwater lake in Shiretoko National Park is located at the foot of Mount Chishibetsu on the Shiretoko Peninsula, a UNESCO World Heritage site, at an altitude of about 740 meters within the mountainous forest. Surrounded by deep mountains and having never been developed with hiking trails over the years, it is referred to as the "Lake of Illusion" by those familiar with the area. There are now established hiking routes and guided tours available.
The area preserves its original natural ecology, showcasing a variety of charming landscapes throughout spring, summer, and autumn. Starting from the entrance of the Rausu Lake trail, the route passes through four marshes to reach Rausu Lake, with a one-way distance of about 3 kilometers, taking approximately 3 hours round trip. Along the way, many precious alpine plants can be seen.
As the wooden boardwalk is only minimally maintained, it is necessary to have light hiking gear and physical fitness. For safety reasons, it is recommended to join a guided tour. The guided tours allow visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the beauty of Rausu Lake. If you have any questions, it is advisable to visit the "Shiretoko Rausu Visitor Center" for relevant information before your trip.
