📖 Details
The Sagano Scenic Railway is a tourist train that has restored part of the old San'in Main Line, which was originally a disused track. This vintage-style classic train, pulled by a diesel locomotive, runs from Saga Station, adjacent to JR Saga Arashiyama Station, to Kameoka Station, covering a distance of 7.3 kilometers with a travel time of about 25 minutes.
The train winds along the Hozu River valley, offering breathtaking views of the river's magnificent natural scenery and the beauty of the valley through the windows. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom; in summer, fresh greenery flourishes; in autumn, maple leaves turn vibrant colors; and in winter, occasional snow scenes create a dynamic beauty that changes with the seasons and should not be missed. The train slows down at the most picturesque spots, allowing passengers to leisurely enjoy the stunning views outside the window. The train meanders along the Hozu River, weaving through the valleys. Through the windows, passengers can take in the splendid natural beauty of the Hozu River and the majestic scenery of the valleys. The valley's landscape changes with the seasons, leaving one in awe: cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, falling leaves in autumn, and a blanket of snow in winter. At scenic locations, the train slows down, allowing passengers to relax and appreciate the views outside.
The train consists of a diesel locomotive and five sightseeing cars, with the most popular being car number 5, "Fugui." The ceiling is fitted with glass, and the sides are open for ventilation, providing a more immersive experience of the wind and the gentle flow of the river.
All seats on the train are reserved, and tickets can be booked one month in advance. Tickets for the cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons often sell out quickly, so it is best to make reservations early. During the autumn foliage period, around 4:30 PM, there is a nighttime illumination of the maple leaves, allowing passengers to enjoy a dreamlike scenery that is completely different from the daytime views.
